Top 10 Things To Do In Darwin, Howard Springs, and Beyond

The good people at Tourism NT has put together a list of 10 things you can do in and around Darwin. This is our shortened version of it but you can find the original article here.
  1. Head to the markets! Darwin is famous for its markets, where you can find homemade treasures, some great bargains, and one of the most diverse ranges of street food anywhere.
  2. Relax at the Darwin Waterfront Precinct. It’s great to be out in your caravan or camping with your 4WD, but when you need a little luxury, hopping into town and lapping up the Darwin waterfront precinct will make for a great “day off”. That will have you close to Stokes Hill and the Darwin Harbour – always a great view.
  3. Sample the city’s attractions. Darwin has plenty of shopping, especially at the Smith Street Mall, along with other shopping centres. And there’s always nature about, like the ability to cuddle a baby crocodile at Crocosaurus Cove.
  4. Explore Litchfield National Park. This must-do on your stay at Kipling’s Retreat. Litchfield is about an hour southwest of the park where you can pack a picnic for a day of swimming in crystal clear swimming holes and under waterfalls. Apart from some excellent bushwalks, there’s a great 4WD track and you can also wander through the ‘graveyard’ of towering termite mounds.
  5. Jumping crocodiles. The famous Jumping Crocodiles Cruise takes place at Adelaide River about an hour south of Kipling’s Retreat, along the scenic Arnhem Highway towards Kakadu. The bird and wildlife displays at the free Window on the Wetlands Centre is also worth a stop.
  6. Aboriginal culture on the Tiwi Islands. If you do come for a longer stay, consider a 30-minute flight or a 2.5 hour ferry ride to the Tiwi Islands, where you can immerse yourself in Aboriginal culture.
  7. Cruise Darwin Harbour at sunset. People rave about these evening cruises and given that Kipling’s Retreat is only a short drive away, you can enjoy them, too, as you watch the sun set over the horizon.
  8. Exhibitions and galleries. Darwin is known for its range of galleries featuring work by highly collectible Aboriginal artists. On top of that, our museum and art gallery create an oasis for the senses, along with a memorable experience of Cyclone Tracy.
  9. Meet the wildlife. The wildlife we have up here in the Top End fascinates everybody and the Territory Wildlife Park, about half an hour south of Kipling’s Retreat, gives you the perfect way to get up close and personal, safely! From treetop aviaries to the nocturnal house, you’ll have plenty to see, with a stop at the nearby Berry Springs Nature Park for a swim afterwards.
  10. Fogg Dam. We’re best known for our wetlands and about 45 minutes east from Kipling’s Retreat, you’ll find Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve, where you can see more than 250 species of birds throughout the Dry Season (May to October). Some of the billabongs here also have hides, if you want to get serious about your birding.
